What are my options?

There are many contact lens options available. Your eye care provider will take your lifestyle and vision correction needs into consideration when helping you select the right lenses for your eyes.

Here are some of the most common contact lens types:

• Daily wear contact lenses – Most contact lenses are daily wear. That is they are worn all day and then removed at night for cleaning. These lenses generally last until their given expiration date, at which point they must be discarded and replaced because the lens material begins to break down.

• Disposable soft contact lenses – Intended to be worn for a short time, to help prevent allergic reactions or bacterial infections in sensitive wearers. Disposable lenses are also appropriate for children who might not take excellent care when cleaning their lenses.

• Soft contact lenses – Soft contact lenses are popular because they are very comfortable for the wearer. Soft contact lenses don't "pop out" the way hard lenses occasionally might. Soft lenses are appropriate to correct near and farsightedness and astigmatism.

• Extended wear contact lenses – Extended wear contact lenses are designed to be worn constantly for long periods – up to a week. They do need to be deep cleaned weekly, however. Unlike all other lenses, extended-wear contacts can be worn while sleeping. The lens type allows sufficient oxygen to reach the eye for health.

• Hard contact lenses – Hard contact lenses are rigid gas permeable. This means that they are porous enough to allow oxygen to enter through the lens into the cornea. Hard contact lenses keep their shape on the eye. As such, they are sometimes recommended to curb the progression of nearsightedness in younger wearers.

Helpful tips for contact lense wearers

1. Wash your hands before putting your contacts in and taking them out.
2. When taking a contact lens out of the package, make sure there aren't any tears or holes. If there's a hole or tear, throw it out, open a new package, and check again. Give our office a call, and we can replace the bad lens for you.
3. Only use solutions recommended by your doctor.
4. Do not use water to rinse, clean, or store your contacts.
5. Do not sleep in your contacts.
6. When in doubt, take the contacts out. Look them over, clean them, and make sure they are not inside out.
7. If your contact lenses fall on the floor, the counter, or your clothes, be sure to clean the lens before putting it in your eye.
8. If your allergies are bad, or you have a cold, flu, etc., do not wear your contacts. Wear glasses until you're feeling better.
9. Never wear your contact lenses if your eyes are red and/or irritated.
10. Wash your face and shower before putting contacts in.
11. Put contacts in after using spray deodorant, perfume, or cologne.
12. Makeup should be applied after contacts are in.
13. When first wearing contacts, wear them for about four hours the first day, then add a couple more hours the next day, gradually building up to wearing them for a full day.
14. Only use drops that are recommended by your doctor. Some drops are not meant to be used while wearing contacts.
15. You can swim with contacts in. Bring a backup pair of contacts and glasses with you, just in case. If you like to open your eyes underwater, wear goggles.
16. Your eye doctor will prescribe your replacement schedule. It depends on the contact lens material and design, as well as your lifestyle and the condition of your eyes. Do not wear the contacts longer than the specified time.
    • Daily lenses: Replace every day.
    • Bi-weekly lenses: Replace every two weeks.
    • Monthly lenses: Replace every month.
