Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment is used for patients with severe meibomian gland dysfunction and rosacea. IPL is followed by Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) to give the glands an extra boost. When used together, IPL & LLLT are very effective at reducing/eliminating ocular inflammation and symptoms for our most severe dry eye patients.

IPL is a polychromatic light that, thanks to thermal pulses, stimulates the meibomian glands to resume their normal activities. The light pulses are applied to the periorbital (area near the eye) and cheekbone, it stimulates the contraction of the glands by increasing the lipid (oil) stream and thereby reducing the evaporation of the tears. This also reduces the abnormal microvasculature near the lids that contribute to inflammation and dry eye.
